The pricing needs to come down significantly in order to make it worthwhile - which is one of the main goals he stated in the 60 minutes story - so it would be affordable in India etc.

The only way for it to be really "green" would be to run it off reclaimed methane, which is really only practical if you run it off reclaimed landfill methane, or animal waste / byproduct methane.

One of the scifi books I read (I think it was "Difference Engine" by Sterling / Gibson) they had street lamps running off of methane from the sewers. I've heard other people theorize that this could be a great un-tapped energy source.

I agree with the discussion on why it makes sense that trucks switch to electric, if Tesla is put into position to begin supplying more batteries on a preferred basis then they are going to make a lot of money.

Meat not bad for the environment?

Wha?! How would Americans eating less meat create more hunger in starving countries?

The original report doesn't seem to be online, but here at the ACS website it says:

Mitloehner says there is no doubt that livestock are major producers of methane, one of the greenhouse gases. But he faults the methodology of "Livestock's Long Shadow," contending that numbers for the livestock sector were calculated differently from transportation. In the report, the livestock emissions included gases produced by growing animal feed; animals' digestive emissions; and processing meat and milk into foods. But the transportation analysis factored in only emissions from fossil fuels burned while driving and not all other transport lifecycle related factors.

so this is really a quibble about the percentage assigned, not disputing the tons of methane produced by animals using the traditional method of corn-feeding livestock to make them really swelled up and bulbous. Transitioning the developing world to a more meat-heavy diet will once again create the need for more livestock, and thus more methane will be produced! Also let's remember methane is eight times more efficient at trapping heat than c02 or carbon monoxide...

That is pretty cool, he should sell his floor plans to builders in NYC and other giant cities. Only thing is that system would be perfect for one person only. For two people or more they'd always have to agree when to use what (you can't take a bath, I'm sleeping over it! etc.)

I would also worry about breaking a roller or having my entire kitchen going off-track and falling over after a few years of hard use, but the concept still warrants further consideration IMO.

He certainly has a vested interest in creating confusion...

For those of you who believe that self-interest should be a strong motivating factor, here is an instance where his self interest will eventually be harmful to himself and his progeny.

Bill Gates Launches American Energy Innovation Council

He noticed that the oil companies aren't doing much! I was speaking with a young post-refinement Shell officiate the other day who specializes in oil byproduct manufacture and sales (lubricants) and she had very little to say on any alternatives being developed for Brazil- which has more wind and solar than any of the European countries that have made heavy investments so far. I decided not to tell her about BAM still being developed in Ames, because the London office might not be aware yet and it would be a shame to ruin the surprise.

Efforts to make the southern U.S. more energy efficient by 2020 could help create 380,000 new jobs, save 8.6 billion gallons of water, and help consumers reduce their energy bills by $41 billion.

Futurity articles for everyone! I fear to check if the original study was proposing clean coal overhauls. Also notice Ike Turner paid in part for this research
